WARNING: SPOILERS AHEAD. Overall, I found the finale of Angels of Death Episode 16 to be very sad and emotional, but quite well done. I will admit though, it was not actually the ending I was hoping for. I was hoping Rachel would have a change of heart and decide to live, but that seems to not be the case. Still, the way it ended does leave it open to multiple interpretations as to what occurred. The most obvious and likely is that Zack killed Rachel and then was killed himself later on.

It was interesting how the priest and Danny explained many of their reasons for doing what they did. This helps to wrap up some loose ends. Still, there are many loose ends the anime never wrapped up. Many of these loose ends had to do with the symbolism of the show. For instance, the show never seemed to explain the meaning of the blue moon. We never seemed to find out where all the people who were getting killed by the angels of death came from nor why they were the ones chosen to be killed by them. We also don’t know how they got to the different levels.

In addition, much of what Danny and the priest discussed was confusing. It was hard to get clear answers from their conversation. Leaving some things unclear can be a positive though, as it helps to leave the viewer wondering what much of the show meant. It’s also possible these are explained in the manga, but not the anime.

As for the plot of Angels of Death Episode 16, it was excellent and unpredictable all the way to the end. My mind ended up quickly working trying to predict and figure out how things would play out. The whole entry into a city was surprising. I felt like they were instead going to enter a graveyard area, since we saw such an area during the intro. The whole development with the mental institution was also ironic. This actually reminds me of the first episode. It seemed Rachel was getting counseling toward the beginning of the anime.

The episode also did a nice job really bringing out the emotions of the characters as well. This is true not just of Zack and Rachel, but the priest and Danny as well. I did in fact feel sorry for these characters given all the trials they had to go through and the fate they ended up facing. This was a very fitting end to the show.
