WARNING: SPOILERS AHEAD. For the B Gata H Kei Episode 1, the show is off to a good start. The first episode did a nice job setting the narrative and laying the groundwork going forward. It’s clearly showing this is a comedy show that should not be taken too seriously by the viewer. Secondly, the character development hits the ground running very quickly and did an excellent job showing the characters’ personalities. In addition, the character development is very humorous, so we are laughing as we understand who the characters are.

For Yamada, I am definitely liking her personality as it sets up very well for a comedy series. She shows herself throughout the episode to be very awkward and is generally a very weird girl. She’s hypersexualized and clearly a pervert. Yamada’s very picky with who she dates, and her standards for what she wants in a guy are ridiculous. She acts angry when she’s not really mad. Yamada’s not very clever with being subtle. She tries to be calculating with her decisions, but is absolutely terrible at it. She is desperate to seduce Kosuda, but her plans to seduce him are absolutely ridiculous. To top it all off, her life goal she’s so determined to achieve is absolutely insane. I mean, who comes up with a life dream of having sex with 100 guys before you graduate high school?

In all, Yamada is downright crazy. This definitely has loads of potential for laughs as well as absurd, but entertaining story arks. I’m quite glad this show has a cuckoo protagonist, as it makes things more interesting and exciting than having a boring hero. In addition, Yamada’s flaws are also great. By having flaws, it makes it more difficult for her to face her challenges and gives her room for growth.

As for Takeshita, she seems much more sensible than Yamada. She obviously gets frustrated with Yamada’s antics, but she sticks it out with Yamada anyway for some reason. Takeshita also seems quite attached to Yamada and appears to care for her, which could make things interesting going forward.

Looking at Kosuda, he seems like a very nice guy and a total gentleman. He is much more sensible and not nearly as crazy as Yamada. This could work out though, as having two polar opposite personalities could make for a nice romance going forward.

For the Eros Deity, she seems very fun as a character. Having her around as a narrator makes scenes funnier and helped to bring out the comedy in this episode. It also helps to expose how absurdly Yamada thinks. I like how instead of having an angel on her shoulder to guide her to do the right thing she instead has a spirit guiding her on how her perverted goals; it ties in nicely with the main plot and is fitting for Yamada’s hypersexualized personality and craziness.

Overall, the characters have a variety of personalities, which adds plenty of potential for the show. B Gata H Kei Episode 1 definitely hit the ground running. I am looking forward to the next episode and definitely feel this is going to be a great show.
