WARNING: SPOILERS AHEAD. Overall, I thought To Love Ru Episode 1 was completely ridiculous, utterly absurd, extremely crazy, and totally illogical. In other words, I absolutely loved it. This is clearly an anime that embraces its own ridiculousness to a very strong degree. Sometimes shows have ridiculous elements, but they try to downplay them and shy away from them. In this case, the anime openly embraces its ridiculousness, which makes it work.
To Love Ru Episode 1 was also incredibly humorous. There are plenty of funny characters and funny jokes in the show, which is making it very enjoyable. Much of the humor relies upon just how absurd and ridiculous the show is.
The anime is also quite heavily sexualized. The fact that the show is openly embracing its sexualization instead of shying away from it is also a positive. I know not everyone likes sexualized media, but obviously there is an audience for it and this show is clearly trying to appeal to that audience. So far, the sexualization is done quite well.
As for the plot, the plot of the show is definitely hitting the ground running. In addition, the plot also ties quite strongly with the show’s ridiculousness since the plot so far is ridiculous and crazy. I am curious to see how the plot unfolds, but so far it seems very fun.
As for the characters. Rito is definitely appearing to be a caring and fun protagonist. He is clearly brave when not addressing the love of his life but is nervous telling his love the truth. Rito comes across as a lovable loser personality, and this personality feels like it works for this kind of anime. He clearly cares about others and is willing to go out of his way to assist them.
Lala seems like a very friendly character. She also seems quite naïve about Earth’s ways. She comes across as being bubbly, ditzy, humorous, and extremely fun. I am also curious about the devil references she has and if this has something to do with her personality. I am looking forward to seeing her in the rest of the series.
As for the other characters, we haven’t seen quite enough of Haruna and Pete yet to fully understand their personalities, though Haruna seems like a good person so far.
I am looking forward to seeing how this series plays out and am looking forward to watching and reviewing the rest of the series.
