WARNING: SPOILERS AHEAD. For To Love Ru Episode 2, I absolutely loved this episode and thought it was absolutely fantastic. I am now seriously wondering why I didn’t start watching this anime sooner since it’s so awesome.
Firstly, the humor in To Love Ru Episode 2 was super hilarious. Just when I thought the humor couldn’t get any better, it gets better. It was one just absolutely hilarious joke and event after another. The characters have super funny personalities that all gel together in a way that works super well. It’s not just the main characters who are hilarious; the surrounding characters and their interactions with the main characters are also hilarious as shown by the giant mob in school.
Next, this episode was once again heavily sexualized. Clearly, this show is embracing its heavy sexualization and fanservice. I find this to be a positive that it is not shying away from it but is taking advantage of it instead.
In addition to these fun aspects, we also got some serious and emotional moments as well. These were well done as they showed these characters personalities on a deeper level. It helps to raise the stakes and reminds us that these characters are still people with feelings, desires, and serious goals and this show is not going to be nonstop laughter and sexiness.
We also got lots of character development in this episode. We are seeing much more of how Rito and Lala are personality wise. Rito is clearly caring deep down. It showed he does genuinely care for Lala and her happiness even if he doesn’t want to marry her. Lala is friendly on a deep level as well, not just a superficial level. As for Zastin, he’s clearly an idiot, and his presence is very fun. Looking at Mikan, she’s very caring and seems sensible, reasonable, and on top of things. As for Pete, he’s clearly protective of Lala and cares for her safety. Also, it seems Haruna does in fact have feelings for Rito, which can make things more complicated.
As for the plot, we got loads of plot development in this episode. The love triangle between Lala, Haruna, and Rito is clearly growing quickly and accelerating. Having Lala appear in school is also helping to thicken the plot.
Despite the amazing positives, I do have one big fear about the anime though. My concern is that the show so far is so good, that future episodes will seem disappointing and appear to be let downs by comparison since the anime so far has set an extremely high bar. I honestly don’t know if the show is going to be able to sustain (or exceed) this incredible pace it has so far. Hopefully this fear does not come to pass and To Love Ru stays totally awesome. I am definitely looking forward to watching and reviewing the rest of the series.
