WARNING: SPOILERS AHEAD. The Devil is a Part-Timer Episode 5 was fantastic. It was absolutely hilarious with one piece of great humor after another. In addition to the fantastic humor, the episode did a lot of work advancing the plot and developing the characters. We got to really understand what is going on, as this episode answered lots of questions and explained many intriguing events from previous episodes.
Looking more closely at the humor, it is so impressive just how hilarious this show is. There are some comedy shows that come up with lots of jokes that are simply okay but not great or just simply fail to land. This show though has done an impressive job pumping out one piece of great humor after another. I also like how the show’s humor relies heavily on the unique personalities of the characters as well as their interactions with each other. This is also a sign of good character development and well-designed characters.
If the characters didn’t have great personalities and/or had poor character development, such humorous interactions between the characters would not work as well. Given that the characters have unique, humorous, and awesome personalities and those personalities have been well developed, the comedic interactions are able to click very nicely. This is especially true where Satan and Emilia are forced to work together despite being so feisty with each other. This works well with Chi and Alciel as well. Even the interactions with Lucifer work well. This is because Lucifer was developed very quickly and he was shown to be a cocky, playful, and overconfident villain, which works for a comedy show like this.
In addition to the awesome humor, we also got loads of plot development in The Devil is a Part-Timer Episode 5. For one, the whole showdown in this episode was tense and exciting, which was quite nice. I enjoyed the fight scene and it had some emotional elements mixed with the action, which helped to raise its stakes. We also got to see that Emilia finally seems to care about Satan, as she seemed sad when she thought he was dead.
We also got answers to many intriguing aspects of the show. For instance, Chi hearing voices, the earthquakes, the mysterious cases of violence, and why Satan could briefly retake his form. Honestly though, I thought this may have been one mistake the show made, as it gave the answers too easily. Normally in media, it is better to create intrigue by presenting these mysterious and only slowly giving the viewers information. This is better than just dumping the answers so quickly when you’re not that far yet into the media. The show could have done this better by only hinting at these answers. Instead, it gave them away in rapid succession.
On a more positive note, we got to see lots of new events to move the plot forward. Chi now knows that they aren’t human and understands that Satan and Emilia aren’t dating. This implies that her relationship with Satan is back on. Still, there were lots of questions left unanswered in this episode. We also don’t yet know what will happen with Lucifer and Olba. We also don’t know what will occur back at Ente Isla, how the rest of the corruption in the church plays out, and what will happen with Emeralda and Albert. Thus, there are still plenty of plot lines the show could take and plenty of questions left unanswered. I am curious to see how this all plays out.
